Gallagher: Attacks on medics must not be tolerated

SDLP Health Spokesperson Tommy Gallagher MLA has supported calls for a card system to curtail attacks on health workers by abusive patients.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “Sanctions must be introduced to support health workers and all health professionals who are repeatedly bearing the brunt of violent attacks from patients.
 
“Attacks of this kind must be stamped out as quickly as possible.
 
“However, there must be a full consultation on the imposition of these penalties and a thorough examination of how they will impact upon the healthcare of patients.
 
“Additionally good coordination is required across the health service to include all health professionals in the implementation of these punitive measures to insure that no frontline health workers are left out- whether they are based in a hospital environment or in the community.
 
“It is a sad reflection of our society that people indulge in these despicable verbal and physical attacks against those trying to care for them or their family members.”
