Speaking at the beginning of Carers Week, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “It is very demoralising for those who provide care and support for family members to know that the level of care and support afforded to them varies dependent on where it is being delivered.
“While consideration must be given to the current economic climate, carers are entitled to fairness and consistency in the support provided to them by the relevant authorities.
“Carers are only too well aware of the differences that exist in terms of both quality and quantity from one health trust to another. Differences in standards within the same trust area are also becoming more commonplace.
“The budget for health and social care is this year, for first time, managed by the Regional Health and Social Care Board. This provides an opportunity for a fresh start and can be the catalyst for a move away from the many outdated arrangements that have existed here. I am concerned for carers however, lest they remain the very first item on the chopping block when cuts are required.
“Further unwelcome news is the Health Minister’s new money saving exercise whereby all patients will in future have shorter hospital stays. This will mean greater demand for domiciliary care and even greater pressure on the dwindling budget for carers and home help.
“As health spokesperson and a member of the Assembly Health Committee I will fight for parity of treatment for carers and those providing home help and I intend to hold those in control of the health and social care budget to account, through regular reports and representations to the Health Committee.”
