Gallagher: Hospitals’ hip treatment record ‘not good enough’

SDLP Health Spokesperson Tommy Gallagher has said that performance of Altnagelvin and the Royal Victoria hospitals in their treatment of patients with hip fractures must be improved.

Thu 2nd September

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “It is vital that both of these hospitals improve on their hip fracture treatment record, which is simply not good enough.

“For many people fractures are a very painful experience and it is also very worrying for families while they wait for their relatives to be treated.

“Often it is older people that suffer this injury, which can have a major impact on their overall general health and morale.

“Last year particularly, there were a very high number of fractures due to adverse weather conditions and these hospitals must have measures in place to deal with this.

“I will be raising this matter at the Health Committee and will be urging them to look at in greater detail the performance of these two hospitals in relation to their treatment of hip fractures.”
