Gallagher welcomes commonsense decision on Fermanagh school

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has said the withdrawal of a consultation to close St Mary’s Brollagh Secondary School near Belleek is a commonsense decision and highlights the role and benefits small schools play in their local rural community cannot be quantified by enrolment numbers.

Tue 19th January

Mr Gallagher, who highlighted the issue at the Assembly, said the decision is a victory for commonsense:

“The plan to close St Mary’s Brollagh just because it was the smallest school was an indefensible plan. At least now St Mary’s will be treated in the same way as all post-primaries in Fermanagh.

“When I brought the motion about the plan to the Assembly there was absolutely no political support for the decision. This is a victory for the local campaign group involving teachers, parents and the children themselves. People in Fermanagh and throughout the west should take heart from this outcome.

“I express the hope that in any future consultation there will be a more commonsense approach adopted from the beginning. The decisions regarding small schools must not be taken only on a crude financial basis. The benefits small schools offer their local communities far outweigh any other so-called disadvantages.”
