Kelly: People power responsible for crackdown in anti-social behaviour

SDLP South Belfast Councillor Niall Kelly has said that the determination of residents, working with local councillors and council officials, was responsible for a massive reduction in anti-social behaviour in the Finaghy area of Belfast.

Speaking after a public meeting to discuss the entertainments licence of the Emerald Roadhouse Cllr. Kelly said: “When I look back to the situation which residents in Orchardville and Ardmore faced a couple of years ago in relation to anti-social behaviour from the Devenish Complex, I see an area which has been transformed.

“What was once a situation where many people were unable to get a peaceful nights sleep has been totally changed. Weekends in Orchardville and Ardmore are now a great deal quieter. People are not awoken in the middle of the night by shouting and roaring from people leaving licensed premises in the area.”

“This transformation was brought about by the hard work of the residents of this area and people, like my predecessor Carmel Hanna, who made it clear to the Council that they were not prepared to tolerate their rights being trampled all over every weekend.

“It has taken a long time, and a lot of hard work, to get to the situation which were are now in. Residents in this area have had many promises made to them for many years but I am determined to ensure that the massive reduction in anti-social behaviour in this area is permanent.

“The residents shown that though people power they have been able to create positive change in their neighbourhood.”
