Speaking before the adjournment debate Mr. Maginness said: “For the past year my constituency office has been contacted by several people who have been served with enforcement notices, which have been issued by the Planning Service, against roof extensions which they have built to their homes.
“These people were misinformed that they did not need planning permission for these extensions and they have spent thousand of pounds putting up these extensions.
“They are now faced with the very real threat that they will have to take these extensions down, incurring additional costs, running into many thousands of pounds, if they do not remove them.
“This has understandably caused them a great deal of anxiety and concern.
“These extensions were built by decent, hardworking people, who only wanted a bit more space in their homes. They had no idea that they needed planning permission for these extensions and many of them now face extreme financial hardship.
“There are many houses in North Belfast which have similar such extensions, many of which have been constructed over four years ago and are not subject to enforcement notices.
“There has been a clear breakdown of communication and a failing of planning policy to adequately deal with this issue. I would call on the Minister to show some compassion to the people of North Belfast and to instruct his officials to do all what they can to ensure that this matter is dealt with in a way that ensures that this matter can be dealt with in a way that is fair to all.”
