Maginness welcomes North Belfast regeneration

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness has welcomed the announcement by Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA that her department is to spend £28m to redevelop the Upper Long Streets area of North Belfast.

Mr Maginness said: “I very much welcome Margaret Ritchie’s decision to inject this massive investment into North Belfast.
 
“For many years the residents of the Upper Long Streets have fought for the redevelopment of their area. The announcement today is the fruit of many years of hard work by local residents and priority decision-making by Minister Margaret Ritchie.
 
“The Minister has met with residents on a number of occasions and she has seen firsthand the condition of these houses.
 
“This investment will have a huge impact on the lives of so many people in this area. Their current homes are over 100 years old and they are in grave need of modernisation.
 
“Margaret Ritchie promised local residents that she would do what she could to help them out and today’s announcement is evidence of her commitment to this pledge.”
