Mallon: Council should respect views of residents

SDLP North Belfast councillor Nichola Mallon said Belfast City Council should not reject the views of residents on renaming a street for purely party-political reasons.

Tue 2nd November

Speaking after a Council decision on a split vote to refuse to reject a proposal to rename a street in the Newlodge district as McGurks Street, she said:

“The bombing of McGurk’s bar was one of the worst atrocities committed during the Troubles and the local community is still deeply traumatised as a result.

“This decision to ride rough shod over the clearly expressed views of the local community represents a dark day for Belfast City Council.

“As a Council we have a duty to consult with, respect and reflect the views and wishes of local residents. That is why the SDLP proposed that, in keeping with normal practice, a decision on naming this street should reflect local people’s views.

“This duty has been abandoned by those intent on deliberately politicising this issue and making it divisive.

“I will do what I can to support local residents to ensure their voice is heard”

Notes to editor:

SDLP Amendment proposed by Cllr Tim Attwood and seconded by Cllr Nichola Mallon:

That the Committee defer consideration of the naming of the street to enable residents therein to submit an appropriate name.

20 voted in favour of the SDLP Amendment. 22 against (Unionists and Alliance combined).
