He said: “There is something very wrong about the way that the real bad news in the draft budget is coming out in dribs and drabs, particularly on roads. The dropping of the A2 project is going to impact on a very large number of people who commute to Belfast and few of them will have known anything about it until now.
“It also underlines just how crude this whole budget process is and why we are perfectly correct to say that it is not fit for purpose. The fact is that £16 million has already been spent on the A2 project, including £12 million spent on acquiring property at the peak of the boom which is now going to lie there doing nothing for years on end. That does not look like good planning or prudent stewardship of taxpayers’ money.”
