McDevitt calls for All-Ireland approach to climate change

SDLP South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt has called on the Environment Ministers both North and South to put climate change on the agenda of the North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) as a matter of urgency.

Tue 16th March

He said: “I am concerned that the NSMC is not considering the single biggest environmental threat to this island.

 

“Across Ireland local government and state agencies are all working to respond to climate change yet it seems it is not a priority for the NSMC.

 

“I am calling on both Environment Ministers to put this issue on the agenda of the NSMC at its next meeting in October 2010-03-16

 

“Climate change presents a real and present threat to our island. The NSMC is the perfect way to better understanding of its potential impact on our economy and our people.

 

“Ignoring it is no longer an option. We need a signal form the top that this is a shared priority.”
