McDevitt welcomes block on sex offender website

SDLP South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt welcomed Minister for Education Caitriona Ruane’s move to block schools access to an educational resource site website run by a convicted sex offender.

Wed 3rd February

He said: “Last Friday I warned the Minister that many schools were downloading  workpages from the ‘Sparklebox’ teaching resources website. The person who owns this site, Samuel/Daniel/David King/Kinge (he has changed his name by deed-poll) was found guilty and imprisoned last week for making and possessing indecent images of children and babies. Today the Minister has been in touch to say that access through the C2K education portal has been blocked.

“This matter was brought to my intention by concerned parents in my constituency. I have checked out the claims made on the website http://www.brendenisteaching.com/sparkle.php and they are true.

“It is important that this site should continue to be monitored by the authorities and that parents and everyone involved in education should be aware of what has happened in this case and what lessons might be learned about internet safety.”

Note to editors:

According to reports the owner and operator of Sparklebox, Samuel Kinge (formerly David Kinge), was found guilty of making and possessing indecent images of children, including ‘abuse of babies’. He is reported to have been discovered with over 400 of these images. Samuel was sentenced on  8th January 2010 to one year in prison, of which he will serve 6 months, and restricted internet use for 15 years. He had previous similar offences. After the previous offence, he faked his own death using a social networking site (posting "Daniel Kinge died on November 18") in order to change his name and reinvent himself.
