McDonnell: City streets are not a boxing ring for waring youths

South Belfast MP Dr. Alasdair McDonnell said the treatment of city centre streets as a boxing ring by warring youths will not be tolerated.

Thu 3rd December

His comments come after seven youths of school age were arrested for fighting on Royal Avenue in the City Centre last night. This follows last week’s incident when youths gathered to fight after the switching on of the Christmas trees lights at the City Hall.

“While the context of this fight is unclear at this stage, it is clear that a group of school aged youths gathered to cause disorder and fight at Royal Avenue in the City Centre.

“This kind of disorderly and violent behaviour is not acceptable.

“I would like to commend the PSNI for their quick action in using CCTV evidence to quickly identify and arrest those involved. This has sent out a clear message that we will not permit our city centre streets to be used as a boxing ring by warring youths” he said.
