Councillor O’Hanlon said: ‘The new Government in Dublin has committed the Irish Government to appoint an independent international expert commission to review and report, within six months, on the cost of, undergrounding (all or part of) Meath-Tyrone 400KV Interconnector.
“This is a very welcome development and I know this commitment will be welcomed the length and breadth of this Island and this community.
“For a number of years now, the communities from Meath to Moy have campaigned for the undergrounding of this project and have argued that government should provide independent costings instead of listening to the spin of NIE and Eirgrid.
“I am now calling on the Northern Ireland Executive and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment to stop the current process and call in Planning Service to stop any works on the current planning application.
“In welcoming this commitment, we need clarification as to the makeup of this new commission and those independent experts appointed should be in consultation with the pressure groups in both Armagh/ Tyrone and Meath and not just appointed at the behest of the energy companies.”
