Ramsey writes to minister over Derry jobs transfers

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has written to the Environment Minister voicing his concern over job transfers from the Derry planning office.

Thu 29th July

He said: "I have written to Edwin Poots about job transfers out of the Derry planning office.

"The Planning Service in the North West is to lose at least 27 positions from their Derry and Coleraine offices. Over 50 per cent of the transfers will be from the Derry planning office. Staff will be offered alternative jobs, and while there is no certainty about where those jobs will be, it is likely that some people will be offered jobs in Coleraine.

"Any such move to Coleraine would differentially impact on people with dependants and caring responsibilities, very often women, because of the distance and travel time involved.

"Given that Derry is the area of highest unemployment in the North, it would seem appropriate that alternative civil service functions should be transferred to Derry rather than jobs being lost from Derry.

"There is also concern that people to be transferred were selected at random without taking into account experience, length of service or qualifications.

"I have asked Mr Poots for an urgent meeting to discuss this matter."
