Ritchie: Emergency budget unfair

SDLP leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie MLA today condemned the Chancellor’s Emergency Budget which she claimed was both unfair and potentially divisive.

Tue 22nd June

Speaking from Westminster she said:

“This budget is unfair because it places far too great a reliance on public expenditure cuts as a means of tackling the deficit. This approach will always hurt those on lower incomes most.

“The government’s slogan ‘We’re all in this together” now rings hollow. Instead of making those who caused the financial crisis, pay for the crisis, nearly all of the burden is falling on the shoulders of public sector workers.”

“In addition the Chancellor’s budget signals an onslaught on the social security benefits system and threatens to decouple the link between those who have work and those who do not. This will undermine our social cohesion in the years ahead.

"In Northern Ireland, we are promised some vague initiative in the autumn which will attempt to rebalance the Northern Ireland Economy but in the meantime we face cuts, job losses and increasing hardship for many of our most vulnerable households.

“The SDLP will strive to ensure that the impact of this budget is minimised in the North”
