She said: “Since being elected Leader of the SDLP, it has become clear to me that it would be inappropriate to allow my own name to go forward as the Party nominee for Justice Minister.
“I have decided that the SDLP will still nominate and the nominee will be Alban Maginness, a colleague of mine who is very well qualified for the position.
“We welcome progress made on the devolution of policing and justice.
“The position around the Hillsborough ‘arrangement’ is that we are giving active and positive consideration to a range of propositions.
“I expect there to be a Leaders meeting tomorrow and things should be a little clearer.
“However the proposed approach to appointing a Justice Minister is nothing short of a corruption of democracy.
“We will make our judgement on the Hillsborough arrangement when we know what is on the table and more importantly what is under the table.
“If the two parties won’t reveal what they have already agreed then we will be pressing the two governments for greater transparency.”
