Ritchie to attend Pope’s Westminster Hall address

SDLP Leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie MLA will attend the Pope’s address to civil society in Westminster Hall tomorrow (Friday.)

Thu 16th September

Speaking as the Pope arrived in Scotland, Ms Ritchie said:

“I am delighted that the Holy Father is visiting Britain and I would hope that this trip is a forerunner to a papal visit to the island of Ireland in the near future.

“I am looking forward to attending his historic address in Westminster Hall - a venue of great significance to Catholics as the place where St Thomas More was tried and condemned in 1535.

“Along with fellow MPs and other guests we hope to hear from the Holy Father his views on public life and other common issues of concern such as international development, the environment and ecumenical dialogue.

“The Pope’s visit will also give Catholics in Britain and Ireland the opportunity to renew their faith and reconnect with the Vatican after what has been a turbulent period in the Church’s history.

“I sincerely hope this proves to be a respectful, memorable and joyous visit which will also afford a chance for those from other faiths and denominations to hear the Pope’s message of peace and goodwill to all in our society.”
