SDLP call for action on Horseshoe Bend blackspot

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness has written to the Environment Minister calling for a reduction of the speed limit near the Horseshoe Bend accident blackspot on the Crumlin Road area of the city.

Tue 3rd August

Mr Maginness said: “Following the tragic accident on the Crumlin Road, in which a motorcyclist was killed, I have been asked by a number of people to lobby the Environment Minister to reduce the speed limits in this area. Over the years there have been a number of very serious accidents near the Horseshoe Bend, which is a notorious accident blackspot.

“For vehicles to be able to travel along this road at speeds of up to 70pmh is a recipe for disaster. The layout of the route, and the fact that there are a number of driveways which join the road, make it incredibly dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

“I have written to the Minister asking for an urgent review of the speed limit on this stretch of the road and would hope that swift action will be taken to address this problem.

SDLP North Belfast Councillor Nichola Mallon echoed Maginness’ call for a reduction of the speed limit.

She said: “It is not the first time that a fatal accident has occurred in this area and is a sad reminder of the dangers which are ever present on our roads.

“People who live in are extremely concerned about this treacherous part of the road. Anything that can be done to reduce the speed of traffic is to be encouraged.”
