SDLP Research and Policy Internship Programme

 

Following the success of the SDLP communications internship programme the SDLP are launching a policy and research internship to allow anyone with an interest in politics to gain the necessary experience to embark on a career in the industry. We hope this will give our interns an exceptional insight into the world of political policy and research.

 

Internships at the SDLP will last between three and six months and are on a full-time basis. Interviews will be held on Thursday 30th September and Friday 1st October.

 

This placement is on an expenses only basis (lunch and travel).

 

Interns will undertake a wide range of work with our busy policy unit based at Party Headquarters and Parliament Buildings, Stormont. This will include a wide range of work, liaising with our MPs, MLAs, councillors and party officers.

 

This work includes:

 

  • Research for and preparation of policy papers, briefings and initiatives under supervision from the Senior Policy Officer.
  • Assisting in preparation for SDLP annual conference and other party policy events.
  • Attending party meetings as required.

 

Essential Criteria:

 

  • Good research, writing and communication skills.
  • Keen interest in politics.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, have professional attitude and a keen desire to learn.

 

Desirable Criteria:

 

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland and Westminster structures of governance.

 

Consideration will also be given to people with relevant experience and those who are currently studying.
