Mr Attwood said a crucial moment was fast approaching for the project and the £370m cut in the budget must not see the hospital placed on the back burner.
Mr Attwood added that the new hospital should be a capital priority in a future Northern Ireland budget.
Speaking in advance of a meeting with the Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey, in early January 2010 Alex Attwood MLA said:
“A crunch moment is fast approaching for the proposed new Mothers and Babies Hospital. The cuts of £370 million in the Northern Ireland budget this year and the potential for more to come means now is the time to put the new hospital as a top priority of capital project. That is the message the SDLP will pass on to the Minister when we meet on 12 January.
“A strategic decision must be taken by the Health Department and the Executive. It is simple. A Woman and Babies Hospital cannot wait. The Royal Maternity is more and more the regional centre for babies. At the same time, more and more mothers opting for Royal care. A full blown government commitment is needed – there cannot be more drift or delay or doubt.
“As a parent with two children born in the Royal Maternity in the last four years, I and all parents know the quality of care in difficult circumstances. There can be no more ifs and buts about the hospital.
“The Health Minister should make the right decision and put the hospital as a top priority and put in place the funding in each of the coming years necessary to see the promise fulfilled.”
