SDLP welcomes ‘Platform for change’

The SDLP has welcomed today’s launch of 'Platform for Change' in Belfast.

Thu 25th February

Party Leader, Margaret Ritchie MLA, said it was very welcome to see people from all communities, members of political parties and private citizens coming together to build a stronger North.

She said: “I have been following the evolution of Platform for Change with interest. It’s great to see it launched today. The SDLP has been represented on the Platform’s management committee by Conall McDevitt MLA and we endorsed its programme at our recent party conference in Newcastle, Co Down.

“I look forward to working with Platform for Change in the years ahead. It is imperative that we build real politics here that is strong on the issues that matter to ordinary people.

“Platform for Change’s focus on education and sustainable economic policies as well as building a new and shared future for everyone in Northern Ireland is in line with my own priorities as SDLP Leader.”

Conall McDevitt MLA a member of Platform for Change’s Management Committee said the past year’s work had brought many non partisan people back into political discourse.

“The consultation meetings which took place with hundreds of people over the past six months were a real breath of fresh air. They proved to me that there is a huge appetite for real politics here in Northern Ireland and that people want their politicians focussed on the issues that matter.

“I am in the Assembly to make the North work. Our ambition must be to build a strong region on Irish soil while respecting its inhabitants diverging national aspirations. The SDLP wants to make the North work because a strong North means a stronger Ireland. This is surely an ambition which we can share with the vast majority of people in this region. Platform for Change can play a big part in making Northern Ireland work”
