Older people

The SDLP believes that the good health, independence and well-being of senior citizens must be a top priority, and we're concerned that today's pensioners are being forced to live on insufficient pensions and often in fuel poverty.

Alongside party colleagues in the Assembly, Margaret Ritchie and Alex Attwood have shown our commitment to tackling fuel poverty by getting the Assembly and Executive to address this widening and deepening problem, showing that the Executive must not merely leave the job of tackling fuel poverty to energy companies.

We are committed to enhancing the provision of care for the elderly, and have called for a model similar to those already in place for child care with a view to developing a strategy on elderly care. This is all the more important in light of our ageing population.

The SDLP welcome the establishment of an Older People’s Commissioner to ensure that the voice of older people is heard and that they are involved in all policy-making decisions.

The SDLP wants to see an end to the discrimination against older people in the workplace. As well as being grossly unjust, such discrimination is costly and inefficient.
