Thomas at a Glance

Thomas is 50-years-old and orginally from Aldergrove. He now lives in Crumlin with his wife Therese and their three young sons, Bobby, Patrick and Malachy.

A keen GAA entusiast, Thomas is a big supporter of his lcoal club, St James' at Aldergrove and a committed campaigner for the development of recreational facilities throughout the consitutency. He is a strong advocate of GAA youth initiatives which help pass on the tradition and passion for the game.

In addition, Thomas is a director of Antrim's Citizen Advice Bureau and also sits on the Board of Governors of three local schools - St Joseph's Primary School in Crumlin, Rathenraw Integrated Primary School and Crumlin Intergrated College.

 

Political Career

Thomas has been MLA for South Antrim since 2003. He also serves as councilor in Antrim Borough Council and sits on the Assembly’s Agricultural and Rural Development Committee. In 2010 party leader Margaret Ritchie appointed Thomas spokesman on Culture, Arts and Leisure a post he held until May 2011

He has a special interest in farming issues as well as the challenges being faced by non-farming rural dwellers. Furthermore, he has a strong commitment to urban regeneration and improving access to social housing.

Thomas is a regular user and supporter of public transport and has campiagned heavily for the re-opening of the Antrim-Lisburn railway line and for improvements in rural bus services.
