Declan at a glance
Declan O’Loan is the SDLP MLA for North Antrim. A native of Co Antrim he attended St MacNissi College, Garron Tower. Upon graduation he studied in Imperial College, University of London, and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he received degrees in mathematics and education respectively. He is married to Nuala and has five sons.
Declan taught mathematics for many years, initially in England, later at Rainey Endowed School, Magherafelt, Methodist College, Belfast and St Louis Grammar School, Ballymena. He also spent three years teaching in Kenya.
Political Career
Declan has been a member of the SDLP for 20 years and is chairman of the Ballymena Branch. He is party spokesperson on finance and personnel and sits on the Assembly’s Finance Committee and is chair of the Assembly’s Standards and Privileges.
He has been a member of Ballymena Borough Council since 1993.
A member of the Ballymena Citizens Advice Bureau Declan is also a past Chairman of the Ballymena District Partnership. He is a member, and former chairman, of the Ballymena Local Strategy Partnership and is treasurer of Ballymena Community Forum, a consortium of community and voluntary groups, and a member of the Community Relations Council of Northern Ireland. He is involved with the Society of St Vincent de Paul and is treasurer of its Ballymena Branch.
Declan is the chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly Standards and Privileges Committee and vice chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee.
