McKevitt: Casement Park plans a huge boost for GAA

SDLP South Down MLA and spokesperson for Culture, Arts and Leisure Karen McKevitt says plans to transform Casement Park into a modern 38,000-seater Gaelic Games stadium is a huge boost for Gaelic games in Ulster.

Welcoming the decision by SDLP Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, who today gave the green light to the multi-million pound plans, Ms McKevitt said the new stadium will be for the benefit of the entire GAA community.

MLA McKevitt, who is parliamentary private secretary to the Environment Minister, congratulated Mr Durkan stating: “It brings huge investment into the area, and into a sport that does so much great work for all sections of the community. The investment is not just for Belfast, but for the entire GAA community and will open up tremendous economic and sports tourism opportunities, as well as finally providing headquarters for Gaelic Games in Ulster.

“I have no doubt my colleague Minister Mark H Durkan has taken the concerns of the residents in West Belfast into consideration as part of this decision. I know my colleagues in West Belfast will continue to work with residents so their concerns are heard.”
