Durkan: “Derry is not going to be a place of cold security – but of warmth, welcome and safety”

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan raised the “strong and resilient” response by people in Derry to the recent firebomb attack on The Everglades Hotel in the House of Commons chamber yesterday.

Mr Durkan said: “Does the Secretary of State recognise that the recent attack in the name of the IRA on a hotel in my constituency was an attack not just on that business, but on the city?

“Does she support the city in having a strong, resilient response that says, “We are not going to be a place of cold security; we are going to be a place of warmth, welcome and safety”?

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Theresa Villiers replied: “I can wholeheartedly agree with that statement.”
