McKinney Backs Petition to make cancer drugs available

SDLP Health Spokesperson Fearghal McKinney has today backed a petition by cancer sufferer Gary Vint calling on Health Minister Edwin Poots to make 39 cancer drugs available in Northern Ireland that are routinely obtainable in England.

Mr McKinney said:

“Mr Vint has displayed the most selfless attitude to his own condition in the midst of what is obviously a traumatic situation for him and his family. He has sought the support of the wider community in his campaign to help others in their own fight against cancer.

"I am delighted to see that he has reached a major milestone in his online petition, which has been supported by people across the region. I hope more will now sign up and that ultimately the Minister will act on what is a very reasonable demand that drugs, many of which are developed here, are made available to those living locally. The Minister must finally erase the inequality which has led to a large number of drugs being available in England, Wales and Scotland but not Northern Ireland.”
