McKinney: Critically ill children need certainty not further delays
“Critically ill children and their families need certainty not further delays. The review into children’s heart services was due at the start of July but now it would appear that there is no expected date for the delivery of that review.
“In the meantime an unprecedented number of sick children are travelling to England for treatment.
“This not only adds to the stress and discomfort of the sick child but places an unnecessary and unreasonable burden on their families.
“These children, and their families need certainty and it was hoped that a review of the services would provide clarity on the way forward for treatment.
“An all-island paediatric cardiac surgery model would appear to make the most sense for families here. Continued delays and a lack of a date for the review are no longer tenable. The Minister for Health must commit now to a date for publication of the review and an action plan for taking any recommendations forward as a matter of urgency.”
