Ritchie: Urgent action needed to restore Kilmorey hotel and support staff

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said that she is deeply saddened at news that the Kilmorey hotel has ceased trading and 22 members of staff will lose their jobs.

Ms Ritchie said:

“I was disappointed to hear that the Kilmorey hotel in Kilkeel is to cease trading with 22 members of staff being laid off. This is devastating news in the mouth of Christmas, not only for those directly involved but for the town as a whole.

“There is now a significant onus on the administrators to ensure a proper and fair level of compensation for those who have lost their jobs. They must also bring forward options for the sale of the business to new owners.

“The people of Kilkeel possess an unmatched work ethic and a great entrepreneurial spirit. I hope that a new owner can be identified quickly who will ensure the reopening of this hotel to accommodate the breathtaking tourism opportunity of the Mournes.

“I will be seeking meetings with the Enterprise Minister, Invest NI and the administrators to ensure a swift resolution is found for staff, the local community, the local economy and the tourism industry.”
