Kelly: Christmas holidays painful time for domestic abuse suffers

SDLP Policing and Justice Spokesperson Dolores Kelly MLA has said that Christmas can be a terrifying time for those facing domestic abuse; out of the normal routine and a lot of time spent behind closed doors can heighten the level of violence victims face. Mrs Kelly added that legislation is long over-due to specifically deal with domestic abuse, and that those holding Stormont in deadlock, preventing this, should be ashamed of themselves.

The MLA for Upper Bann said:

“We know domestic abuse happens all year round, not just Christmas. However, we know incidents of domestic abuse increases over the festive period. Unfortunately, many of these instances go unreported. This provides a stark reminder of the important need for legislation that directly protects domestic abuse sufferers rather than relying on different pieces of law to cobble up a case.

“It is vital that a clear message goes out to domestic abuse sufferers that they do not have to suffer in silence. I would urge victims to pick up the phone to the police to get help this Christmas or to freephone Women's Aid on 0808 802 1414. Likewise, it is incumbent upon those of us who have concerns about family, friends or neighbours, to contact the PSNI’s 24 hour Domestic and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 802 1414.”
