Kelly welcomes High Court ruling on legacy funding
Ms Kelly said:
“We give a general welcome to the judgment from the High Court this morning. They have confirmed what many of us have believed for some time – that Arlene Foster’s decision to block funding for the Lord Chief Justice’s plan to deal with legacy inquests on the basis that a broader agreement on legacy was needed is fundamentally flawed and ultimately unlawful.
“The ruling, however, will be cold comfort to victims and their families who have been waiting years, and in some cases decades, for an inquest into the death of a loved one.
“In the absence of an Executive, it’s clear that these matters must be advanced immediately. The Secretary of State has the authority to end this situation and release the funds. She should do son but the SDLP has also called for the British and Irish governments to immediately convene the British Irish Intergovernmental Conference to act. We have called for both governments jointly to agree a package of legislation, including on the establishment of legacy bodies and the release of inquest funding. People should not be forced to wait any longer.”
