McCrossan calls for a cross-party blueprint for a New Ireland
After addressing the All-Island Civic Dialogue on Brexit Conference this morning in Dublin Castle, Mr McCrossan commented:
"As an MLA representing a border constituency, I hear everyday the very genuine and sincere concerns about the return of a hard border. The SDLP have been very clear, there can be no return to the borders of the past- dividing the peoples of this island. The Backstop must be banked. It is the only mechanism that will prevent a hard border.
"We have also be clear that the chaos of Brexit should not be used to call for a border poll. Our only focus right now should be breaking the cycle of failure at Stormont and getting back to the Good Friday Agreement.
"Nonetheless, we believe now is the right moment for the re-establishment of the New Ireland Forum. This forum must be a diverse and welcoming platform that allows space to create a cross-party blueprint for a new Ireland; a call our party leader Colum Eastwood made in early 2018. No referendum should be called until this work is done."
