Eastwood: No government means no power and no power means no change
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said last January’s collapse of the DUP/Sinn Féin coalition was the product of a deeper malaise over the course of a decade of failure. He said the summary of that 10 year period told a story of DUP intransigence and Sinn Féin weakness. After a year without a local government, Mr Eastwood urged all political leaders to return to the realisation that the fundamental purpose of politics is to wield governmental power for the common good – not to simply eternally protest. He pointed out that in the hours before the Executive’s public collapse a cross-party bill had just been agreed to finally introduce marriage equality in Northern Ireland. The collapse of our government meant that this didn’t happen – one year on those rights and many, many others are still denied.
