Brian Heading was elected to Lisburn City Council in 2005. He was Chair of Leisure Services, Deputy Mayor and Mayor of the City of Lisburn 2010 -2012. He has an interest in Economics, Fuel Poverty and Residential Care Homes and has spoken at public meeting and brought resolutions to council to pressure the NI Assembly.
In 2014 he was elected to Belfast City Council and is currently the SDLP's Deputy Group Leader on the Council.
In 2019 he organised the special meeting of the Council to save the Belfast Ship Yard. He has continued to raise social issues at Council on poverty, benefits and job creation. He recently had Belfast Council recall its manufacturing forum on jobs.
