Karen entered politics in 2005 and was elected to Newry and Mourne council. She topped the poll on her 1st run and worked hard to gain herself a reputation of 'one who gets the jobs done'.
In 2011 she was elected to represent South Down in the NI Assembly and within a short period of time established a reputation of providing a first class service on a wide range of issues including housing, benefits, planning, health education and more. Karen held various appointments including Chief Whip of Assembly grouping and NI Assembly Commissioner and PPS to the Environment Minister.
Karen's approach has stood by her and when she ran for election for Newry Mourne and Down Council in 2019 the voters kept the faith and re-elected her.
