Martin is married to Grace, has four children and lives in Glenone, Portglenone. Now retired, he was a former Principal of St. Mary’s P.S. Harryville, Ballymena. He have been a member of the SDLP for over 40 years, holding many different posts, both at Branch and Constituency level. 

Martin served as SDLP Group Leader from 2015-2019 and Chair of Mid Ulster Council in 2019/20.  

Martin is deeply involved in his local community as: Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors’ of St. Conor’s College, Secretary of Roger Casement’s GAC, Member of Greenlough Parish Pastoral Council, Director of Glenone Business Park and Portglenone Enterprise Group.  

He has a small farm and his particular interests include education, the environment and community development. Martin is a former member of the B.B.C. Education Council (N.I.) and Judge of the National Teaching Awards.
