Social Democratic and Labour Party Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath MLA has urged anyone eligible to receive their Covid-19 booster vaccine to book an appointment and keep it.
The Stormont Health Committee member said that there is worrying evidence that people aren’t keeping their appointments as booster uptake in Northern Ireland remains low.
Colin McGrath MLA said:
“The best tool we have to prevent people from becoming seriously ill and ending up in hospital is the vaccination programme. The vaccines work, they are keeping people safe and have allowed us to roll back some of the most severe restrictions.
“It is seriously concerning then to hear from the Ulster Chemists’ Association that up to half of people who have booked a booster jab aren’t turning up for it. While our health service is working at full stretch, the last thing we need is a widespread waning immunity problem.
“We also cannot have a situation where people are waiting for their booster but are unable to access it quickly because others are booking appointments and not turning up. It’s so important to book your booster and keep your appointment as soon as you can.
“I would also encourage people not to wait for the call to get your booster. If it has been six months since your second vaccination and you are in the cohorts currently eligible, please book it. You can contact your local community pharmacy for more information.”
