SDLP Deputy Leader Nichola Mallon has said her thoughts are with the patients of former neurologist Dr Michael Watt after he was removed from the medical register.
Ms Mallon said that while it was welcome Dr Watt has been removed from the medical register she would have preferred a public tribunal took place rather than a voluntary application for removal.
The North Belfast MLA said:
“My thoughts are with the patients of Dr Watt who have been through so much to get to this point. While it’s welcome that Dr Watt has been now been removed from the medical register and can no longer practice medicine it would have been preferable for patients if a public tribunal was held to remove him so the full case could be heard.
“While proceedings took place behind closed doors in this instance I remain hopeful that the public inquiry into the work of Dr Watt will allow the exact facts to be established, patients to have their say about the enormous impact on their lives and bring them the answers and closure they crave after the harrowing experience they have endured.”
