SDLP Lisburn North councillor Pat Catney has said that local residents are concerned at proposals for a poultry farm in the area.
The farm would be situated in the Tullynacross Road area and contain up to 32,000 hens.
A planning application is currently with Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.
Councillor Catney said:
“I have met with a large number of residents in this area who are concerned about the impact this poultry farm could have. This site of this farm is not far from large housing estates and families are worried that it could bring significant disruption to their lives.
“There have been issues raised about the large number of vehicles travelling to and from this site when the roads aren’t equipped to handle them. Other concerns include the potential for smell as we have seen with other sites of this nature. They have also raised the lack of engagement with the local community.
“The plans include proposals for manure to be taken from this site and transported to Sligo. Given the harsh lessons we have learned around Lough Neagh and issues with reporting and recording the transfer of this type of material, I would ask who is going to monitor this and ensure it does not end up polluting our local area?
“On behalf of the SDLP I will continue to engage with residents and ensure that their voices are heard loud and clear throughout this process.”
