Declan has been an active member of the SDLP since 1986 and is now a Councillor in Newry Mourne & Down.

Declan works in Countryside Management with DAERA. He has held many positions in the organisation from Party Executive to South Down Constituency Chairman.

Declan has a strong commitment towards representing the needs of the rural community particularly planning and rural development. A trustee member of the Board of Governors of Carrick P.S. Burren and involved with St Mary's Burren, local GAA club.

One of his main ambitions is to contribute positively to the SDLP's commitment to delivering an Agreed Ireland through the Shared Island Unit.
