De Faoite: SDLP focused on family friendly Belfast Sundays

Séamas de Faoite Belfast Sunday Opening Hours

22 May 2026

SDLP Belfast City Council Group Leader Séamas de Faoite has said the debate around Sunday trading must focus on creating an inclusive and welcoming Belfast city centre experience.

Councillor de Faoite was speaking following a compromise agreement to allow extended Sunday opening during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann this summer.

SDLP Councillor Séamas de Faoite said:

“This conversation should be about what kind of city centre experience Belfast offers its citizens, as well as visitors.

“Whilst Alliance and others have pushed for measures that would mostly benefit major multi-national retailers, who already make millions of pounds of profits each year, we’ve argued for a family-friendly approach that protects workers’ rights and small businesses, whilst improving the Belfast experience on Sundays.

“Today’s decision will help us get to that point, and we’re pleased to have secured animation funding to help our arts and culture sector. This will go along with our existing commitment to spaces like St. George’s Market where music and culture go hand-in-hand with support for traders.

“We’re also glad to support continued engagement between the Council, Trade Unions and the independent retail sector."
