SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said that Education Minister Paul Givan must respect and value the role of classroom assistants.

He was speaking ahead of an SDLP Opposition Day motion in the Assembly on Monday.

The motion also acknowledges the opposition from classroom assistants, trade unions and the education sector to recent proposed reforms, including around special educational needs (SEN).

Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan said:

“Simply put, schools could not function without the efforts of classroom assistants. They provide vital support not only to pupils, but to teachers and other school staff, carrying out a wide range of educational and pastoral duties. Their dedication to their jobs and the support they provide to our young people is second to none.

“In recent years the role of a classroom assistant has become ever more challenging, with a lack of job security, increased demands and many not being paid year-round. There is no doubt that the sector needs serious reform, but not the changes suggested by the Minister, his Department and the Education Authority.

“The recent proposals from Minister Givan fundamentally fail to recognise the crucial role played by classroom assistants, particularly when it comes to supporting pupils with SEN. For many young people with SEN, one-to-one classroom assistant support is crucial to their development and their ability to thrive in the school environment.

“This is the latest example of Minister Givan ignoring pupils, parents and the education sector as he pushes ahead with harmful reforms. Questions must also be asked of his Executive colleagues who are allowing the Minister to reshape our education system without proper scrutiny.

“The SDLP Opposition proudly stands with our classroom assistants and we will be making their voices heard directly to the Minister today. If they are not properly valued and treated with respect they will look elsewhere, and that would be a massive loss for the young people who rely on them.”
