SDLP Opposition Communities Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed new legislation which will see Northern Ireland provide free sign language classes to all children and their families. The Sign Language Bill also gives official recognition of British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL.)
Speaking on Tuesday following the passage of the Final Stage of the Sign Language Bill in the Assembly, the MLA for Foyle said:
“Today marks a historic moment for Northern Ireland with the passage of landmark Sign Language Bill.
“This is a major step forward for the Deaf community and for building a more inclusive society where everyone can access public services, education, employment and healthcare on an equal footing.
“Northern Ireland is now among the first jurisdictions on these islands, alongside Scotland, to bring forward Sign Language legislation. What makes this Bill especially significant is that both British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language are valued and recognised as part of the rich cultural fabric of this place.
“Legislation like this does not happen by accident. It is the result of sustained campaigning. I want to pay tribute to campaigners, the deaf community and the British Deaf Association for their efforts.
“The Bill will improve outcomes for Deaf children, young people and families by strengthening access to language from an early age and supporting better opportunities across education, employment, wellbeing and confidence.
“Today is not the finish line, but rather a starting point. We now have a responsibility to build on the momentum created by this Bill and break down barriers wherever they remain. At a time when politics can often seem divided, this Bill shows what can be achieved when we work together and deliver for all the people we represent.”
