SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has welcomed the establishment of the John Hume Prize.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced the honour in memory of the late SDLP Leader, Foyle MP and MEP on Tuesday.
It will recognise a European citizen who demonstrates the values John Hume championed throughout his life and will be awarded by the European Parliament.
Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said:
“I welcome this announcement from the Taoiseach today. This award will be a fitting tribute to the legacy of John Hume and ensure that his vision continues to inspire future generations. Throughout his political life, John believed the European project was about bringing people together, breaking down barriers and proving that cooperation would always achieve more than conflict.
“At a time when many in Europe and around the world seek to divide people and demonise anyone perceived as different, this prize is an important reminder of the values John held dear. He believed difference should never be a source of conflict and that respect, partnership and dialogue offered the only path to lasting peace. Those principles are needed now more than ever as international relations become increasingly unstable and isolationist politics gain ground.
“John often described the European Union as the greatest example of conflict resolution in history. It showed that countries once divided by war could choose cooperation over confrontation. John knew that our shared future is always stronger when people work together in their common interest and this prize will be a lasting reminder of that.”
