SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has welcomed a €3.5 million investment from the Shared Island Fund for the North West Cancer Centre.
The funding will be used to establish a new North West Cancer Support Centre at Altnagelvin Hospital to support people with cancer and their families.
Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said:
“The North West Cancer Centre has been a shining example of how we can deliver better public services when working on a cross-border basis. Since its establishment thousands of patients who would have faced long journeys for treatment have been able to avail of first-class care just a short distance from home, reducing the burden on them and their families.
“When I worked with Taoiseach Micheál Martin to establish the Shared Island Fund, it was to support projects exactly like this that could make a real difference to people's lives in border regions. I welcome this continued investment by the Irish Government in Derry and the North West, particularly at a time when too many vital projects have struggled to secure support from the Executive.
“When completed, this new centre will provide invaluable assistance to cancer patients and their families beyond their medical treatment. Anyone who has experienced serious illness, either personally or through a loved one, understands the emotional and psychological toll it can take. This investment will ensure that people across the North West have access to the additional care and support they need during some of the most challenging periods of their lives.”
