SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has welcomed confirmation from British Rowing that Derry athlete Daniel Collins will be allowed to take part in this year’s British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) as an Irish athlete.
British Rowing has confirmed to Mr Eastwood that Mr Collins will be included in the rankings following the competition in Birmingham in December.
The clarification follows Mr Collins being asked to declare himself British in order to have his performance included in the BRIC rankings.
Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said:
“I’m glad that common sense has prevailed and Daniel can now focus on competing in this year’s BRIC event in December. Following the initial confusion I reached out to both British Rowing and UK Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock and welcome their positive engagement and willingness to find a solution.
“This situation highlights the need for greater understanding in UK institutions about the intricacies of British and Irish citizenship and the distinct Irish identity that many people in this part of our island hold dear. It’s important that this is taken into consideration when decisions around eligibility are determined and that nobody is unfairly disadvantaged as a result.
“Since this matter arose there has been an outpouring of support for Daniel and that will have been important in highlighting this matter. British Rowing has acknowledged the situation, addressed it and now Daniel will be able to compete as an Irish athlete and have his performance included in the rankings. That’s the most important thing and I’m looking forward to cheering him on.”
