SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone Councillor Adam Gannon has welcomed confirmation that almost 1,900 local premises are included in Project Gigabit, but said the focus must now be on getting homes and businesses connected.

Figures provided by the Economy Minister in response to an Assembly Question from SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan show that 1,892 premises in Fermanagh and South Tyrone are included in the project, the highest number of any constituency in the North.

Councillor Adam Gannon said:

"Confirmation that almost 1,900 premises in Fermanagh and South Tyrone are included in Project Gigabit is welcome. The fact we have the highest number of any constituency in the North also shows just how great the need is in this area.

"People living in rural communities have heard plenty about improving broadband over the years. What matters to someone struggling with a poor connection is when they will actually see a difference. This project now needs to get on with the job and deliver for the homes, farms and businesses that so badly need it.

"The scale of the intervention needed in Fermanagh and South Tyrone shows how far rural connectivity still has to go. Too many people here continue to put up with broadband that simply isn't good enough for modern life. Rural communities have already spent years playing catch-up and should not be left in that position any longer.

"The Minister should begin planning now for what follows Project Gigabit, identify where gaps will remain and set out how they will be addressed. Rural communities like ours should not have to wait until the current rollout concludes at the end of 2027 for that conversation to begin. We need to see this rollout delivered promptly, with a clear plan in place to finish the job."
