SDLP Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Group Leader Councillor Adam Gannon has said there is real dismay locally following the removal of funding for the Enniskillen Bypass.
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd confirmed on Friday that £6.6m in funding has been removed from the A4 Enniskillen Southern Bypass project.
Councillor Adam Gannon said:
“People in this area are rightly shocked that, almost two decades after this project was first approved, we are facing yet another setback. The SDLP drove this scheme forward in government, but progress since then has been painfully slow. There are serious questions about the Minister’s and his party’s commitment to delivering this long-promised project.
“I recognise the ongoing court case relating to the A5 and the potential implications for other road schemes, but the SDLP will be seeking cast-iron assurances that this funding will be reinstated at the earliest possible opportunity.
“People in Enniskillen and the surrounding area are fed up with congestion, delays and the impact this has on daily life and on our environment. This bypass is critical to the future development of the town and we need to see real political will from the Infrastructure Minister and the wider Executive to get it delivered.”
