SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP has commended President Michael D Higgins as he leaves office today.
She said he had been a President every Irish citizen could be proud of.
Ms Hanna will attend the inauguration of President Connolly on Tuesday.
South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:
“As President Higgins leaves Áras an Uachtaráin today he can look back with immense pride at his 14 years as President. He has consistently championed the underdog, stood up for what’s right on the world stage and used his voice and position as a force for unquestionable good.
“President Higgins also made a sincere effort to represent Irish citizens living in Northern Ireland. Over the years he has attended many important events and provided leadership in both good and difficult moments. He reached out to communities across this island with warmth and humility.
“His Presidency will be remembered for his passion for the arts, culture and the Irish language, his determination to highlight the plight of those less fortunate and his passion for building a fairer, more inclusive Ireland where everyone has access to the same opportunities.
“President Higgins has left big shoes for President Catherine Connolly to fill, but I have no doubt she is up to the task. She shares many of the best qualities of President Higgins and I look forward to attending the inauguration and engaging with her in the years ahead.”
