SDLP Leader Claire Hanna has said the Executive must take responsibility following the Budget on Wednesday.
South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:
“There are a number of measures to be welcomed in today’s Budget, principally the removal of the two-child welfare cap which has the potential to improve the lives of thousands of children here. The SDLP also supports decisions around tax which will raise revenue from individuals and companies with the most to give. We will continue to scrutinise the detail in the days ahead.
“The Budget also included an additional £370m for Northern Ireland. Now that the Executive has increased financial certainty, we need to see a clear change in approach from what we have witnessed since Stormont’s return. Northern Ireland faces serious challenges across our public services and people are tired of Ministers offering no solutions beyond blaming the UK Government.
“We need to see Executive Ministers recognising that they have the power to change things, while all of us press the UK Government for more. Ministers have the ability, if they choose to do so, to reform our health service, address the cost of living, protect our environment, tackle the shortage of social and affordable housing, address marathon delays in the justice system and help families with childcare costs. A multi-year Budget from the Finance Minister would be an important first step. The public expect leadership from Ministers, shrugging their shoulders is not good enough.
“This Budget process from the UK Government has been unedifying. Briefings, U-turns and leaks do not inspire public confidence and underline why we need to take more control of our own future. If we are serious about building a New Ireland, we need to start by seeing Ministers taking responsibility and delivering for families here.”
